THE BORDER COLLIE

Border Collies, who originated on the borders of Scotland, and this is where they get their name from, had developed their distinctive colour and form by the 18th century.

People bred the Border Collies as working dogs even though in the Victorian Era we find that they had become house pets.

This breed is medium sized, with the females averaging between 48 – 51 cm in height; and the males averaging between 51 – 54 cm. They both weigh between 15 – 22 kilos, depending on the conditions, the amount of work and exercise, and of course, the nutrition.

There are four different colours of Border Collie: the black and white, the tri-colour, the blue merle (with splashes of grey, black and white), and the brown and white (chocolate).

In 1998 the Border Collie received first place in a survey which took place in Great Britain as the most intelligent breed of dog. It is a very calm dog, as a house pet, especially where there are children, as they really love them. It is very easy to train them and altogether makes as excellent family pet.

Today, apart from being family pets, Border Collies are used in nearly all the international airports, for driving away large flocks of birds from the airstrip. They work with herds of sheep and cows, participate in Agility (jumping, obstacle courses, etc.) and participate in civilian and military companies of save and rescue operations.

This is a very energetic dog that needs to go for a walk every day and it's good for the dog to live in a house with a garden, so that it can run about during the day.

Recommendations: Border Collies must be trained, if not, they will train you!! Also, don't forget, the Border Collie which is well cared for and properly raised, will love you more than you love yourself.
